I agree with almost everything you have said and have argued these very points several times with close friends. I feel that finding a dog a great home should be first and foremost, and that there are a lot of great homes that are just not in the financial situation to spend $1000 for a puppy up front, but could afford the cost of having a dog. I do think that established homes who are definitely going to spend well over that titling a dog that a breeder has bred deserves a break on cost. Lets face it those of us who have shown dogs know that $1000 goes quickly in the world of showing a dog. Travel, hotel, and entry fees will suck up $1000 in a couple of weekends, especially with gas prices what they are. Throw in the ear crop and first vet visits and bam you are at another grand sometimes before the pup is 6 months old. Maybe let the buyer keep some of their money to show the dog you bred.

Now all of that being said I totally see where T is coming from as well. The cost of raising a litter is not that huge in the big scheme of things but it does cost. So I agree with charging for a puppy as well. In the case of pedigree and GRCH above average show dogs I do think that people have a right to charge more. The health tests are not always cheap. The amount of money spent to campaign a dog in the top 3 in the country is a lot, and more than I could spend without being murdered by my wife, daughters, mother and anyone else that thought they were represented in anyway by my ability to make a sound and educated decision. So going to get a puppy off of two dogs that owners have achieved this by spending thousands and thousands of dollars, one should expect to pay a little more, no matter who they are or relationship to said breeder. If I want a car to drive on the weekends, but I have to have a Benz than I have to spend Benz money, now if I truly want just a car to drive on the weekend then I should go get that Ford Focus, they both do the same thing get me to and from. Quality is Quality from tennis shoes to Jets. You pay for what you want.

The Barrel horse example is good but a 20k barrel horse would be that 2k dog, and the 3500 dollar green horse would be the 350 dollar newspaper dog, and yes if you spent $350 and had the same GRCH as someone who spent $2000 you would definitely be smiling ear to ear. The best dog I have ever owned cost me just at or under 500 bucks, he is 10 years old now and is worth more than I could ever think of spending. My best show dog cost me a lot more and he is worth every penny as well. With both dogs I feel that I got what I wanted and paid for and I am happy with both.

Friendships and any kind of business can get ugly, so I just try to come up with an amount I deem is fair and if the breeder is not for that then I move on, or ante up if I feel the dog is worth X amount of money. I do think that I am a great home and go above and beyond for my dogs, and do a lot for a breeder whom I purchase a dog from, so in all honesty I expect some discount for a pup, but I am Faze10.
