Gaff Champion 06/05/08 12:56 PM	Tags : None I was chatting with someone at the Carolina Classic this year and we were discussing ring presence. They said something they made so much sense that had never dawned on me and would like some opinions from the board. Do dogs have a more showey, spunky attitude, if they are put outside and get less attention then a dog who stays in the house and is constantly around people and is used to attention?? I had to totally agree with this person as I see it in my own dogs and can almost point out the dogs who are kept in the house.Just seems the outside dogs are wagging their tails more and are so curious, alert and "eager to please and brimming over with enthusiasm" I think we get a great dog and we just wanna be around it all the time...do you think that takes away some of the attitude? www.uberkennels.com UKC Gr. My girl had spent a few days early in the week in an outside kennel run then was crated quite a bit after she was clean. She's generally happy but I did take notice to how she was going around the ring wagging her tail. She also had spunk and attitude outside the ring. That may be a good point! Although, if I were to do this with Veta I think she would still have little to no interest in showing. Poor 'ol gal! Dogs who are always out with their people, always getting to go and do new things, well, they just don't find the show ring all that exciting. I can't blame them. Gaff Champion 06/05/08 3:42 PM	Well I will have to coment on this. Miss Shelby is never outside except for potty breaks, she is loose in the house at all times and sleeps in the bed. If she had any more show presence that what she has now, you would not be able to get her off the ceilings. She has always had that show attitude, thank goodness. Same with Stoney, always ready to rock and roll, never stops his tail fromwagging or his tongue either. I have only one dog that does not like to show, but then again she don't like to do nothing. lol( no names) given on this one lol Even our pull dogs stay inside, and they keep up with yje best of em (AC HOGS) still get the job done. :) Home of the TOTAL DOG!! www.kayokennel.com

Gaff Grand Champ 06/05/08 3:55 PM	Well, I have heard and been told this numerous times also. My theory is...my dogs are housedogs/pets FIRST, show dogs second. Period. I've been round and round with people, including my breeder, but I will not change my routine. I do have runs outside, and when the weather is nice, the boys spend time out there or in the yard. But not in the dead of summer, or frigid winter. They are crated when we are not home. Dynamo is high drive, an inside dog, and will show in any condition with his tail wagging. ( sometimes too much, LOL). Bull is all business in the ring. His tail may not be wagging uncontrollably all the time, but thats because he knows it's his "job" and has his game face on, LOL. I don't have to drag any dog of mine around the ring...they show because they want to. When they stop wanting to, they'll be done. I think if a dog does not like to show, you'll never be able to put that in them, and I think some dogs are just blessed with ring attitude. To me, attitude goes a long way...strting as a pup. Either they have it or they dont't. But say I stop showing tomorrow ( yah RIGHT)....I want my dogs to be wonderful, indoor companions. Right now they are both...but to me, having house manners and companionship is more important than having kennel dogs who "turn it on" because the show ring is their form of attention from me. JMO *** just to clarify, I'm not slamming anyone for how they choose to keep their dogs, this is just my way, LOL To each their own. Administration Gaff Grand Champ 06/05/08 4:29 PM	I have to agree with Auntie K here. Some dogs do break the general rules of thumb. Dangit is very much a spoiled house pet first, always. That's my girl, she barely leaves my side unless she's in heat. Day 1 of showing she's ready to rock from the start. Push her more and she gets bored, by day 3 or 4 she does wind down some. We even do daily walks and I've taken to strapping Fly to HER collar because she's going to bounce and boing the entire time and drag the lug with her. (He gives me this look when I take out the coupler ) I do notice that when I have a girl in heat and Fly gets a whole lot more "crate" time--i.e., the master bathroom, not a real crate--he is up more, and more tuned into what's going on and waggy past the heat cycles of course as I leave them all separate for longer than the worst time of it. ~Jenn S. Overly socializing to me means that going new places and seeing new people is not a huge deal for my dogs because its a regular routine. When I'm home, my dogs are out with me or in the yard. I don't believe in keeping adult dogs in a crate for more than 5 hours a day total. I would label my dogs over socialized compared to people that keep their dogs in crates or kennels the majority of their lives in which the only time they ever experience anything new and exciting would be the occasional dog show.

Gaff Champion 06/05/08 5:19 PM	Well Dilly's always wagging her tail so much in the ring it's going to fall off. She never sleeps in a crate unless she takes her panties off while she's in heat. She goes everywhere and to work with us etc. She has the same attitude all the time. I don't have kennel dogs here but Bug was in a kennel before I got her and didn't do well at all. That makes sense. Why would a dog show be such a big deal if they are out and about all of the time. I find a dog like this completely different than a dead head. My dog likes to go to shows and does not turn into a spaz in the ring but she does what she was trained to do . She also goes to work with me somedays as do my other dogs. Alot more going on at my job than at a dog show..LOL. I had one dog that is a house dog (part of the time) and a good show dog, she was one of the rarities. I just call her my crackhead. She was a real pain in the rear but everytime in the ring was new to her. I have dogs that love being outdoors 24/7 and some that hate it. Bridgette hates being in the house period. I keep her in sometimes but she stays out more. Jewel hates being in the house , Misty loves it. All dogs were raised indoors so it is not a matter of they are only used to being outside. Gaff Champion 06/05/08 6:26 PM	There are some good training books for working dogs that go into explaining that to get tremendous work ethic you only take the dog off his run or out of his crate to work them. They look at the work as the time they get to spend with you and they live for it.

First class losers in my book!! I would rather my dogs be happy pets than good show dogs if it means crating a dog that much..but that's just me. Gaff Champion 06/06/08 11:25 AM	i think it all depends on the dog i have molly who is inside and loose a lot unless in season she gets a lot of crated time...and now that she doesnt show anymore she doesnt like to go or leave the house for that matter but is in heaven just laying around on the couch or on a nice walk....then boomer is in the house half the time and in a indoor/outdoor run the other and is solid any were we go he doesnt care as long as i am doing something with him.....then i have squirt who spent half her time in the house as a young pup then half in an indoor/outdoor run with a huge play area and was a little shy at her first show but now loves it... i just think some dogs are like people to a certain extent and all have different personalitys...depending on how they are socialized at a young age..7 to 12 weeks old....JMO DELMARVA KENNELS www.delmarvakennels.com GR. Gaff Champion 06/06/08 11:55 AM	I have heard this over and over AND Imo there is alot of truth to it. BUT just as a few others stated our dogs are pets first so outside kennels are not an option. We were given some tips a few years back that helped us. All of it came down to the same theory....When you are training, practicing, working whatever ALWAYS use the same routine. Use treats that you ONLY use during sessions, A specific collar/leash, and specific words (stack, stay..etc). Important - don't treat them as "your baby" when working...they are there to work, love later! AND most importantly, feed smaller portions....OK OK don't attack me. Feed them enough, I mean you want them to look good and fit, BUT you want to leave them wanting just that little bit more (trick I used for a few...put normal amount in bowl and take it from them with some left, so they see they didn't get it ALL) do this for a couple days before the show... Your dog knows food comes from you and they want their share they know they didn't get..You will be surprised how attentive they will be to you...This is a very smart breed!!! I guess it's all obvious common sense, but hey when we were new all of it helped us out. BUT this is coming from someone who won't step foot in the ring, I love my dogs and leave the showing to my husband!!!
