...that may have happened years ago. What do you think? (They are all spoken for :-) No seriously...I am writing an article on the pit bull family of dogs and asserting (my opinion) that the pit bull (family) is the most popular dog in the U.S. and the world and possibly has the largest numbers. Can anyone cite a reference that verifies this or maybe has numbers that proves this? (AKC,UKC, ADBA, etc) Registered/unregistered? Thanks,

OK I don't have time to go digging right now....but plenty of time to warn you about the Administration here at Gaff. You'll see 'em, they have the
big red "admin" under their names? So everyone sees how big and red they are?
Well anyways, they are mean as hornets, and delete and ban whomever just types wrong, or maybe misspells a word! I have seen it myself! One in particular, super mean. 
So, I'll probably be able to dig a few of these factoids up for you later tonight or tomorrow. But until then....watch your back, man! You could be next!

What did I do? Why is everyone so uptight around here? Clarification for the meanieheads in Administration
There was a breeding that took place years ago of the now extinct English White Terrier, Black and Tan Terrier, some form of an old Bulldog, and a few others here and there resulting in what is now known as a pit bull. I need some opinions on the offspring of this breeding(s). Do you think that the pit bull in all forms is the most popular/populous dog? Can anyone point to any reference work or fact to substantiate this? *walks away shaking head, happy to not be in the 'in' crowd* Thanks Jenn for any help! "What up Todd, what up gangsta!"

Well you amused me to bits with your post.
No seriously...I am writing an article on the pit bull family of dogs and asserting (my opinion) that the pit bull (family) is the most popular dog in the U.S. and the world and possibly has the largest numbers. (AKC,UKC, ADBA, etc) Registered/unregistered?It is also my opinion that the pit bull is the single most popular breed in the US today. And I do mean the APBT/AST and all mixes therein. Even removing all the dogs that go through shelters that are called pit bulls we would still have a population problem on our hands. IMO. The first area I checked used to have a number figure, but have since removed that. You may want to call the UKC themselves and ask them to share last years number of registered APBTs, which is their #2 breed by registration count. UKC Top Ten Breeds Then we have the AKC Dog Registration statistics but again, only ranks and no hard numbers. Call 'em! What's the worst they'll say?
The above is from HERE and is regarding only puppies registered in France, a country smaller than Texas. It does not include already registered dogs. Scary, huh? Pit Bulls are currently #2 UKC registered dog if I am not mistaken. Staffordshire Terriers, Staffy Bulls, Bull Terriers... 68, 85, and 58 respectively...
don't even come close to the top 10 AKC. This breed suffers ever day from it becoming more "popular" though and I do not look at that as a good
thing at all.

I agree. I know from the looks of the shelters and my local classified ads-they are by far the most popular and most produced. I have concluded that to get an accurate number we would have to take ADBA registrations and AKC registrations and exclude dual registered UKC dogs since AKC and ADBA can be reg'd UKC and guess at the unregistered based on percentages of classified ads, shelters, vet records,etc?? and this number would still be an inaccurate number...because this may be a reflection on the type of owners. *sigh* I guess I will preface my statement with "some experts agree that the pit bull...." Thanks anyway!
